The Environmental Science Program at The University of Alabama provides an interdisciplinary perspective and training to prepare students to solve complex environmental challenges at global to local scales. Our multidisciplinary curriculum leading to the BS degree in Environmental Science is a hybrid between a professional degree with a structured plan and a liberal arts degree that allows students the flexibility to tailor the selection of courses to their interests.

The structured portion of our curriculum ensures that all University of Alabama Environmental Science graduates have a solid foundation in ecological and earth surface processes, data collection and analysis, and human-environmental interactions. The more flexible portion of the curriculum allows students to either take courses across the breadth of Environmental Science or specialize in a subfield by taking a collection of courses in a single area of study.

For example, students specifically interested in forest resource management may take Forest Ecology and Vegetation Analysis, Forest Measurements and Methods, Forest Ecosystem Management: Silviculture, Eastern Forest Communities and Silvics, Forest Ecosystem Restoration, and Dendrology.

Students with an interest in water resource management may select from courses such as Watershed Management Plan Development, Water Resources Management, Watershed Science and Management, River Hydrology, Freshwater Studies, Limnology, and Stream Ecology, among others.

Students also have the option to earn a formal concentration in Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation.
